Passing the Licensing Exams for Dental Hygiene Jobs

Being a dental hygienist can be a great job. The pay is good, the hours are flexible, and the training period isn’t all that long. However, in order to be able to get a job in this field you have to pass the licensing exams. These exams will vary some depending on the state where you live. Most states use the same written exam, however, and just do their own clinical exams.

The first thing that you need to do in order to get prepared to pass the licensing exams for dental hygiene jobs is get the appropriate training. There are more than 250 dental hygiene educational programs that have been accredited by the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation. Choose one of these programs as they will be the most likely to include all the material that you need to know in order to pass the licensing exam. Stay away from any programs that don’t have this accreditation, as the quality might not be as good. Most jobs will only require you to get an associates degree, although there are programs available that result in bachelors or masters degrees as well.

Once you have completed your educational requirements for dental hygiene jobs, you will need to prepare for your licensing exams. Your dental program should tell you a bit about what is required and help you to prepare, but for more information on the particulars of exams in your state you should check out the American Association of Dental Examiners website in order to find out when and where test dates are for your area. There are five different regional testing agencies that administer these tests. Some states, including Delaware, Florida, and Nevada use independent testing agencies instead of the regional testing agencies. You can also contact your State Board for more information on the clinical portion of the exam.

Finding out what areas are included on the exam and studying your course materials in this area can be helpful in preparing for the licensing exams. For those who would like additional preparation for their licensing exams for dental hygiene jobs, there are courses available to give you extra tutoring and practice in the areas of examination.
