To some, teeth grinding is just a minor health issue. And since these people don’t really feel outright what teeth grinding does to them, they tend to ignore the problem thinking that they are not suffering from any medical concerns at all.
The people who think this way are very wrong. And they are exposing themselves to the negative effects of teeth grinding to their health without knowing it. Teeth grinding is not just an inconvenience to your sleeping companion. It is a health concern that needs to be addressed immediately, if possible. If you ignore teeth grinding, here are the negative effects on your health that you are most likely to suffer:
1. Chips on Your Dentures
If you clench your teeth regularly, you will definitely have chips in your teeth and dentures. This means that your teeth would wear down faster than it should. And if you have fixtures on your teeth, the chances are high that you need to get them done again. If you think teeth problems are not major, just imagine yourself being deprived of eating certain foods because your teeth can’t handle them anymore.
2. Jaw Pains
As much as 10% of all people who clenches their teeth at night suffer jaw pains when they wake up in the morning. The jaw most affected when you grind your teeth is called the temporomandibular joint. You very well know that if you suffer pain on any part of your body, the rest of your body would endure it. This means that you will have decreased energy and vigor to do your daily task. Teeth grinding doesn’t only affect your body. It also affects your mindset and bodily functions due to the pain associated with it.
3. Chronic Headaches
Chronic headache must be the most uncomfortable effect of bruxism or teeth clenching. These headaches normally occur during the day. It happens because of the too much force exerted by the facial muscles when the teeth grind each other during the night. You don’t really know how strong and how frequent you grind your teeth when you sleep. 4. Restricted Facial and Jaw Movements
People who grind their teeth too forcefully are most prone to developing what is called the TMJ disorder. TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. If you acquire the TMJ disorder, your will find it very hard to open your jaws or move it sideways. If you push it, you will hear some clicking or popping noises as you move your jaws.
5. Gum Recession
Teeth grinding could cause your gums to recede. When this happens, your teeth won’t be aligned anymore. You won’t have that picture perfect smile any longer, as your teeth are all misaligned. Your dentures will not look as good as it used to. To fix it, you have to go through some major dental surgeries, which could cost you a lot of money.
6. Lack of Sleep
Not all people who grind their teeth at night complain of a not too restful sleep. But nonetheless, their level of rest is affected in a way or the other. While they seem to be very deep in sleep, their bodies are not getting the rest it really need because some of the muscles are still working.
7. Severed Social Relations
However you look at it, teeth grinding affects your sleeping companion as much as it affects you. You are actually depriving your husband or wife of the rest they deserve if you keep clicking your teeth in the night, waking your partner up. This might not be a major problem in your relationship right now. But you never know when it would take its toll on your partner.
